Project Accountant Director

About the Role:

A highly creative and forward-thinking design studio that are well known internationally for their innovative projects is looking for commercially minded Project Accountant with architecture/built environment experience to join social and welcoming team their team in Berlin.

The role will provide financial, commercial and contractual oversight, ensuring budgets are met, projects are monitored and reported on, to ensure profitability is maximised across the studio. The ideal person will have strong project finance experience and will have a sound understanding of German contracts within architecture or the built environment, and will be a confident decision-maker, negotiator, and problem-solver. The role will work collaboratively across our client’s international offices and will be integral to the wider leadership team. Fluency in German and English is a must have.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead all commercial and financial operations for the Berlin studio, including budgeting, resourcing, billing, and compliance
  • Oversee the commercial side of their projects from initial contracts through to project close and profitability reporting
  • Manage project cash flow
  • Negotiate and manage contracts
  • Work closely with project teams to develop scopes, staffing plans, timelines, and fees
  • Support the business development team with fees and proposals
  • Contribute to studio growth planning, financial forecasting, and strategic hiring decisions
  • Ensure operational and commercial compliance
  • Maintain accurate planning and reporting systems, providing updates and commentary on project health
  • Ensure clear communication between internal teams and external stakeholders on all commercial matters
  • Being a go to person and resource for commercial queries for the wider team
  • Attend internal and external meetings where required to provide commercial support to the management team
  • Aid with problem solving and strategic decision making

Key Skills/Requirements:

  • Previous experience in a similar role within the design / architecture / built environment
  • Strong project finance experience
  • Proficient in MS Excel
  • Previous experience in a professional management setting
  • Strong understanding of architectural /construction contracts
  • Confident in fee negotiations, budgeting, contract management, and risk analysis
  • Fluent in both German and English (spoken and written)
  • Collaborative, proactive, and able to operate at both strategic and operational levels
  • Collaborative by nature with strong leadership skills
