Creative Director (Museums/Culture)

About The Role:

The Crowd is excited to be partnering with a leading international design studio renowned for creating immersive, story-driven environments for museums and cultural institutions. Our client is seeking an accomplished and thoughtful Creative Director to lead major narrative design projects, with a strong focus on history, culture, community, and socially meaningful storytelling.

This is an exciting opportunity to take a leading creative role within a highly collaborative, purpose-driven studio, shaping ambitious projects that engage audiences and bring meaningful stories to life. The position is fully remote, with applications welcomed from candidates based anywhere within the US.

The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience directing large-scale, multidisciplinary projects within the museum, cultural, or closely related narrative-design sector. This is a senior leadership opportunity for someone who can establish a compelling creative vision, guide projects confidently from early strategy through delivery, and serve as a trusted advisor to clients and internal teams. Candidates should have substantial direct experience with story-led museums, visitor centers, heritage sites, or comparable environments and be prepared to take ownership of complex projects immediately.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a top-tier practice that is leading the way within its sector on an international scale. The studio places a strong emphasis on collaboration and has cultivated a close-knit, supportive team culture. In addition to an exciting and progressive working environment, the practice offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health coverage, a 401(k), an exceptional PTO allowance, life insurance, and a range of additional flexible benefits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and lead the overarching creative direction for multiple complex museum, cultural, and visitor-experience projects
  • Guide multidisciplinary teams across spatial, graphic, content, and digital design, ensuring each element contributes to a cohesive and engaging visitor journey
  • Act as the senior creative contact for clients, leading presentations, workshops, strategic discussions, and key project decisions
  • Mentor and develop creative talent while fostering an inclusive, collaborative studio culture and maintaining a consistently high standard of design
  • Partner with project management, marketing, and leadership teams on project resourcing, external creative collaborations, proposals, and new business opportunities

Key Skills/Requirements:

  • 6-10+ years of direct experience delivering narrative-led museums, visitor centers, heritage sites, or similarly complex cultural experiences – candidates making a first-time transition into this sector will not be considered
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating creative leadership across three-dimensional, story-driven environments, ideally incorporating interpretive content, physical design, and digital or interactive experiences
  • Proven success leading large, multidisciplinary teams and taking complex, high-profile projects from early positioning and experience planning through execution
  • Exceptional client-facing, presentation, and communication skills, combined with an inclusive leadership style and the confidence to make and implement creative decisions
  • Advanced education in architecture, exhibition, interior or industrial design, the arts, humanities, cultural heritage, or a related discipline, with proficiency in relevant design software and a genuine commitment to socially responsible and sustainable design
